ArtPlace Invites LOI for Art-Centered Community Development Projects

Eleven private philanthropies have joined with the NEA and federal agencies to establish ArtPlace, a nationwide initiative to drive economic development and community revitalization through the arts. ArtPlace invites LOIs from arts organizations, artists, designers, and local and national organizations. Seed funds will be provided for entrepreneurial projects with strong local buy-in that focuses on community’s economic development and revitalization and attract private and public support.

ARTS FUNDING DOES NOT REFLECT NATION’S DIVERSITY.
October 12, 2011A new report “Fusing Arts, Culture, and Social Change: High Impact Strategies for Philanthropy” from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy argues that foundation funding for the arts benefits a mostly large art groups with only a small percentage going to emerging arts groups that serve poorer, more ethnically diverse communities. Large arts organizations with budgets of $5M+ comprise only 2% of the nonprofit arts and culture sector but accounted for 55% of foundation funding in 2009.

ARTPLACE, A Public-Private Collaboration
October 5, 2011This new collaboration has been designed to drive revitalization in cities and towns by putting the arts at the center of economic development. Grants totaling $11.5M to 34 projects across the country will integrate artists and arts organizations into key local efforts in transportation, housing, community development, and job creation. Support was provided by Ford, Irvine, Knight, Kresge, McKnight, Mellon, Rasmuson, Robina, and Rockefeller, and Bloomberg foundations. The initiative is backed by a $12M loan fund established with six financial institutions and managed by the Nonprofit Finance Fund. Federal partners include the NEA and the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Transportation, as well as officials from the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Domestic Policy Council. Nonprofits Added Jobs in 2010, Report Finds (9/06/11)
October 3, 2011While other sectors of the economy were shedding jobs, the nonprofit sector experienced a 1% increase in job growth, a new report from the Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Economic Data Project finds. Based on an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonprofits — which employ nearly 10% of all private workers in the US — boosted their employment by a cumulative total of nearly 5% between 2007/2010, despite a challenging economic environment. “U.S. Nonprofits Continue to Add Jobs; Rate of Growth Falters.” Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies 9/02/11.
